Additive Manufacturing

At Academic City, our students and faculty operate 3D Printers through Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) with all 3 stages of designing of ideation, modeling and printing. The approach is determined and concepts are modeled with solid works, prototyping, testing and evaluation of 3D printing.

Currently, some students are working on printing a manipulator or robotic arm to facilitate the learning of mechatronics. The robotic arm will be controlled by MATLAB using a computer with the mathematical models loaded onto the micro controllers like Arduino Uno. Robotic arms are revolutionizing manufacturing especially for product packaging among others.

Another exciting project is the mapping of the entire Academic City campus with the aid of drone technology. This will be printed to showcase the university’s beautiful architecture. This additive printing can be useful for individuals and organizations to share concepts in a more interactive manner that can be appreciated better by partners.

Through academia and industry partnerships, students with the support of faculty have modeled and completed printings for the Sustain City Project and Environment 360’s Waste Hub where prototypes of bicycle handles were printed for women being supported by the hub to be used as a reference for future printings with a recycling printer. At the heart of additive manufacturing at Academic City are the creative and innovative female students who have been modeling concepts and printing them.
